On September 3, 1995, in the heart of Silicon Valley in San Jose, California, Pierre Omidyar created a company originally known as Auction Web. Twenty years later, that company, now known as eBay (NASDAQ: EBAY), is set to celebrate its 20th birthday, and what a twenty years it’s been.
Spurred by the explosive growth of the Internet, eBay, Inc. grew to revolutionize the retail industry, opening up e-commerce channels for small and big stores alike, and spawning hundreds of thousands businesses along the way. Through its growth from infant to adolescent and now onto mature adult, it’s grown up to nearly $18 billion in annual revenues and a market capitalization of over $30 billion.
The wonderful infographic below, produced by Snap Parcel, shows the journey from the first item sold (you’ll never, ever guess what it was) to some of the most expensive items bought and sold on the site over the year.
So, happy birthday, eBay! Enjoy the celebration, and here’s to many more!
